Dr John McCarthy
BDS,MDS (Syd), FPFA
Dr McCarthy was born, raised and educated in Sydney. He graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from Sydney University in 1985, worked in Public Health for 2 years, then joined the Academic staff within the Dental Faculty of Sydney University, during which time he undertook research projects, as well as clinical teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
He completed a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degree, also from Sydney University in 1990. His was the first postgraduate degree completed in Australia which dealt with the emerging branch of Aesthetic Dentistry. He has always had a special interest in dentofacial aesthetics, which involves the study of the human facial form, and how this integrates with a person’s smile and appearance.
He then commenced private practice, which has been his main focus ever since. In 2005 he was inducted into the prestigious Pierre Fauchard Academy, which is an international organisation recognising outstanding contribution to the dental profession and the wider community. Induction to the PFA is by invitation only. He is also a member of the Australian Dental Association, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
John is regularly asked to provide expert witness opinions to various statutory and legal bodies.
His interests outside Dentistry include his family, music, travel and sport. He has a strong involvement in Rugby Union having played, refereed to international level, and now as an administrator.
